Sean
Patrick Flanery -- Enjoying Life
Dan's Interview with Sean --
Dan: Was there anything new for you
with "A Promise Kept?"
Sean: I haven't played a role yet where
I am a father.
Dan: What did you do to prepare for that?
Sean: I really didn't do anything...
I believe that acting is just that-- acting. If you're
supposed to play a transient and you go down to the homeless
area for two months eating out of trashcans, then you're
not acting-- you've become a transient. If you have to
get uncomfortable with a role, then don't do it. I act
because it's enjoyable. If it becomes unejoyable for someone,
they should find something else to do. You know, we're
entertainers. If you don't dig what you do, then don't
do it.
Dan: Now that "Promise" is wrapped, what are
you working on now?
Sean: My schedules all turned around
at the moment because we've been shooting nights on a
film called "Storyteller." This is a pyschological
horror movie where a retarded younger brother feels pressured
to be a serial killer by his older brother. I play the
older brother. I've also had the Dead Zone.
Dan: What about Boondock Saints 2?
Sean:
It's been tough getting our schedules to work so the shoot
has been moving back and back. Right now, we're scheduled
to start after I wrap "Storyteller" which will
probably be August, 2003.
Dan: How important is your workout?
I know while we were in Austin, you were at workouts quite
a bit.
Sean: My theory on working out is to
be healthy. There's two ways you can approach being healthy--
limit your caloric intake or burning the extra calories.
If I wasn't healthy, I wouldn't be able to enjoy eating
chocolate cake. I work out so I can enjoy chocolate cake.
For me, I engage in games that are strenuous because of
competition, not too mold the body. If it helps keep your
body better, than that's great... but that's not why I
work out.
Dan: You do a lot of martial arts...
Sean: I've really enjoyed Jiu Jitzu.
I just competed in the Pan American games where I won
my weight division.
Dan: You seem to be pretty normal for a Hollywood actor.
How do you prevent yourself from taking all the fame stuff
too seriously?
Sean:
I'm a fan of other actors, drivers and musicians. I appreciate
what they can do... what their skills are. I don't take
it to extremes. I am a fan of Elvis Presley, but I would
never go through his garbage. I enjoy the process... I'm
going to be who I am. I am going to lead a normal life.
I fight the "mysterious image". Some feed the
mystery and then complain about losing their privacy.
They think they're going to lose admiration if they don't
embrace their "mysterious image." It's too much
effort maintaining a mystery.
Dan: I know you do music as well. You ever plan to go
into that profession?
Sean: No. I enjoy doing music, but I
do it for myself and maybe my friends. I don't have any
plans to market my music.
Dan: Do you plan on writing/directing your own movie?
I know you've written a script.
Sean:
I am dead serious about writing and directing my movie.
Dan: What do you want to be in 5 years?
Sean: 42.
Dan: (laughs) Where do you want to be?
Sean: I love my life. I hope it's as
enjoyable then as it is now.
